The Sleeper has Awakened

In the past their battles had been in the shadows, Lycan versus Vampire. While humans had been the prey of both only those directly encountered knew the truth, either those humans who came in contact with one or the other were turned or slaughtered their deaths blamed on wild animals or roving bandits. Tales of Vampires and Werewolves(the human name for Lycans) ghost stories to scare children. Now the modern world knows, they do exist and an all out hunt for both sides has begun, the former Death dealer Selene the vampire and her Hybrid lover Michael Corvin heir to the Corvinas blood line have decided to escape and run for safety. They are hunted by both sides Michael by the Lycans because they believe his hybrid blood can strengthen their ranks and turn the tide against the Vampires and Selene because she has killed two elders and betrayed her Coven.

As Selene looks over a rooftop and sees vampires being slaughtered she has a rendezvous at the pier to make her escape with Micheal to evade the chaos being caused by marshal law. The humans are killing without quarter or mercy, united against the monsters that go bump in the night no longer do they assault each other the Vampires and the Lycans must be eradicated. A door opens behind her and an armed human approaches her demanding she turn herself in, his death is swift she has been killing
for centuries her movements a ballet of bones breaking and blood spewing. As she makes her way down the building the trail of bodies and the articulate yet individual ways in which they meet their demise is swift and yet effortless. Even the assailant with the flame thrower is no match for the battle tested angel of death,  after lodging an explosive device into his fuel tanks she hides behind a trash container as he takes his final steps before he blows into a surprised pyrotechnic display, a hot flower of destruction rising towards the heavens.

As Selene runs we are shown TV reports showing a Dr/Scientist speaking of the "infection" that causes Vampires or Lycans, he says that the infection is incurable and that any loved one infected must be put to death you can not save them. His face ashen and unmoving as he speaks of the son he lost to these diseases. We see footage of people being dragged into the streets being sprayed with gases or exposed to UV rays revealing either their Lycan or Vampiric nature. This is a world gone mad for both sides, safe for no one and with no safe places to hide for any as the extraction and elimination teams are relentless in their searches.

Our black clad beauty races towards the pier ready to escape this hell, we pan to the docks where Micheal weights for Selene he informs one of his ship mates to be ready to go as Selene will be there any moment. Unbeknownst to Michael a capture team is forming ranks not far from his hope for freedom. Appearing like the wind Selene appears behind them and begins to fight hearing the gun fire Michael begins to transform into his Blue skinned hybrid form, but the capture team was ready a silver nitrate grenade is shot into his chest and knocks him into the waters. After slaying some of the armed men Selene dives into the seas hoping to rescue her love, a glowing grenade is thrown in after them and her last view is Micheal's face before the explosion that drives them apart.

Underworld: Awakening

A cloudy flash appears, there is a commotion the world seems cold, frozen, yet something is happening. Somehow in a tank marked Subject 1, Selene is hanging suspended upside down in a cryogenically frozen chamber, and she is beginning to thaw. Her eyes flutter open she does not know where she is but she swings and bashes her way free from her icy bed chamber. She continues to see flashes in her mind of someone running, views that are unfamiliar to her, she can not see their face but she sees the world through their eyes. A steel door slams down, she does not know why she is in this stasis chamber but as she observes her surroundings she sees her clothes, vials and needles, and goes about dressing in her familiar attire.  Alarms are sounding whether due to her escape or whoever freed her she does not know but she can not stay where she is, her first thoughts "where is Micheal" she must find her love.

In a room above Dr. Lane, the man from the video flashes advisers other scientists under his direction to put her back to sleep while they deal with recapturing "subject 2", two lab technicians begin releasing a gas into the chamber in hopes of putting the escaped vampire down, seeing the ventilation shaft the Death Dealer leaps and crashes down behind them. One attempts to stab her, his death is not swift as she breaks his arm and then stabs uses the scalpel to release his blood onto the floor, she interrogates the tech as to the whereabouts of her love and where she is before ending his life. She enters a hallway where armed guards attempt to subdue her, in a blink every throat is cutting and bleeding out as she makes her way down the hall towards a window. She acquires a gun and shoots out a window before she jumps down onto a truck that is speeding by. As she looks back she sees the name Antigen on the side of the large building.

The driver of the truck she hit on top of gets a call on his radio that a subject had escaped and attempts to recapture Selene, he gets a shot off into her head and she immediately attacks his jugular vein drawing his blood and repairing her wound.  Still receiving the cloudy flashes in her head Selene makes her way back to the last place she remembers seeing her love, the pier. When she arrives she sees a tall gate erected with  an old lock, the gate was not here before, so odd for them to have it up so quickly. She braces and leaps over the fence and looks around but sees no boat, no Michael. A officer approaches and asks how did she get there, the docks are closed and no one has been there in a long time. In conversation as he looks for the key to open the lock Selene is informed that the docks had been closed since the first cleansing and that some 12 years had passed, when he looks up after finally opening the gate Selene is gone. On her way back towards Antigen she sees a grizzly scene with a dead body and police officers all around, she hears them talking about what happened a young officer sure it is a Lycan attack, while his superior reprimands him about jumping to conclusions. Selene heads back to Antigen and finds an employee there who she interrogates as to what happened and who the other subject was, he tells her no more than when they are close they can see through each others eyes through some strange connection and she drops him to his death, returning the favor of him "letting her go earlier".

Selene runs down an alley, she is getting glimpses of  "subject 2's" whereabouts and notices a cop car that is passing not far from her and a trash chute number. After waiting for the officers to leave she jumps down the shoot, a figure follows soon after her, a young man who was at the crime scene earlier. hearing sounds of Lycans he pulls out a strange blade and begins looking for the Death Dealer, in an attempt to escape from some Lycans who has seen him he finds Selene crouched behind some containers. He explains the current state of events and offers to help her find who ever she is looking for. The person is close she can see that she is not far away but a Lycan is right there. The Lycan is about to enter the container when shots ring out and he is killed by Selene's precision aim, a few more Lycans approach but their bullet ridden bodies fall and resume their human forms as she steps up.  The survivors rushing off to regroup Selene walks into the door and is shocked, the face staring back at her is not Michael's it is a young girl, with eyes that look hauntingly like Micheal's.

The young vampire at her side says he knows where to guy and after stealing a van are involved in a chase in the streets where Lycans in full view of everyone attempt to gain entry into the van and reclaim the young girl. In the ensuing chase the girl is bitten by a Lycan and then rips it's head open, the young vampire kills one as does Selene. After giving the wheel to the young man Selene questions the girl as to who she was and where she came from, after hearing a tale of the young girl freeing Selene and about how she was told that she would die before her mother would ever know her Selene bites her wrist so that she can see her blood memory and figure out if there is anything she missed about Micheal. After seeing nothing she notices that the girl is not healing and yet she has shown uncanny strength. They go back to the Coven where the young girl is diagnosed and made to feed and heals almost instantaneously while healed it seems Selene and the young girl are not welcome, the head of the Coven knows well who Selene is and does not wish to bring the former Death Dealers form of pain and destruction into his fragile home.

While arguments are had a loud crashing is heard, something has arrived to recollect our two escapees. While some vampires run to defend the keep others hurry to escape Selene speaks to the young girl and has her hide while she goes out to face whatever is coming to reclaim a child she never knew. But what she is about to face is nothing like what she expected.

Underworld 4 has a lot of plot twists in it, the young nameless girl(who for I guess the sake of the credits they are calling Eve, I never heard her called anything but subject two, but that's just me) who while powerful also seems scared and alone. She lived her whole life looking and believing in a mother who had no idea she existed. There is a lot of action in this movie and plenty of explosions, while somethings are not completely explained(like how Sebastian the detective learns about Alexander Corvinas when nobody knew his wife was a vampire but I digress) you can kind of get a feel how being on the run has affected the vampires. They are no longer in lush mansions with high tech security, fancy cars and lush gadgets they seem to have taken to the underground life about as well as the Lycans had in the first two movies. They seem weary, hesitant, unsure, exhausted like while they know they still have to fight they can't tell you what victory looks like or how it will be achieved. They have most likely lost many of their highly placed operatives and familiars in the purge, and must play everything close to the vest lest they give away their whereabouts to someone who sells them out to save their own skin.

The young vs the old conflict is passed forward in this movie as David(the young vampire who has been helping Selene) faces off against his father Thomas(the leader of the coven) over how they should proceed with the fight. David wants Selene to train some of their forces in the ways of the Death Dealers, so that they could do more than just hide in the shadows hoping to be left alone. Thomas, weary from seeing so many of his fellow vampires killed just wants to wait out the oncoming storm, vampires after all are damn near immortal Selene herself being from around the 1300's can attest to that. Thomas thinks that the vampires should not go the way of the Lycan youth, David feels that living like there are is not living at all. Selene is not interested in their argument she is ready to take Eve(yeah yeah nameless I know but they gave her a name in the credits so I will use it) and leave, she can defend her on her own or so she thinks. I didn't see anything after the credits(like in Underworld) but they have set this movie up to be a sequel so if you see an Underworld 5 don't be surprised.

I liked this movie it sticks closely enough to vampire lore to be enjoyable for a classic literature fan as well as has enough fighting and gun play to keep you normal action fan happy. There are a few continuity issues in some of the final fight sequences(and notice how I haven't mentioned Micheal yeah after underworld 2 he really hasn't done much, and since he didn't do much in two I'm just saying), I also find Eve's transformation a little weird I don't know if it's because she doesn't fully understand her abilities yet or if since she hadn't been bitten by both(like Micheal had) that she is a hybrid by birth but not a complete hybrid. Which is another thing that leads me to believe there will be an underworld 5, you have this great new character(whom SOME might want to compare to Marvel's X-23, what I'm just saying born in a lab, never saw the outside world, seems to have an uncanny knack for killing, quick healing factor *shrug*) as well as mysteries left over from the actual state of Lycan affairs in the world not what everybody thought.

Oh by the way I noticed somebody asked this on IMDB when I was trying to verify Selene's age I thought she was between 600-800 but I wasn't completely sure. Selene has the ability to walk in the daylight because she drank Alexander Corvinus's blood in Underworld:Evolution it was one of his gifts to her she got the ability to walk in the Daylight and a good bit of strength to boot. If you like Vampires and Werewolves but AREN'T a fan of Twilight I would suggest this movie, me and the siblings loved it even if there were some things we had hoped to see but didn't. You'll know when you get to the end fight what we were expecting I don't want to ruin it for you. Underworld Awakening we are back to the present and the butt kicking that you enjoyed the first two times out.
