For those of us with Netflix subscriptions this weekend has probably turned into a binge watching of the newest season of Daredevil, and a little treat once you finish:The teaser trailer for Luke Cage(series drops Sept 30th, 6 months really Netflix?). I shouldn't be dropping any spoilers by saying Kingpin, The Punisher, and Elektra make an appearance. I wish we got more than 13 episodes a season though, yes I know the shows run roughly 52 minutes no commercials but you can't give me 17 or 20 episodes? As we all know the series old Big Bad Wilson Fisk is in Jail, tossed in the pokey after our hero dons his costume for the first time. And just like last season, you may HEAR of a big bad but you don't really get to see him til 5 or 6 episodes in or did you. One of the things that I came to enjoy this season is that with Kingpin out of the way our hero finds it a lot harder to pin down who is or isn't really behind the strife in the kitchen.
Of course with the Punisher in town, we aren't just gonna be able to get out of this thing without some blood being spilled. Frank Castle isn't one for speaking softly, and his idea of a big stick is a .50 cal, a gatling gun, or anything that will put a HUGE hole in you. The devil of hell's kitchen may be an altar boy but he has some competition, or is it help in our gun toting vigilante. He also has issue with the visit of an old flame, especially when Matty is trying to keep his fledgling or more like flailing law practice afloat. He's got his best bud at his side, a pretty babe and a heap of trouble because it seems the DA is not to fond of vigilante justice and she is AIMING to do something about it.
One of the things I most enjoy about this show is that they tell the story like you are turning a page, each new thing pops off the screen at you. Every new conflict either hints at something you already suspecting or gnaws at the back of you mind making you wonder exactly who or what you missed. Matt Murdock's life is always gritty, neat or tightly ordered ends will not do here. And they never play it safe, they are either going to hit or they are going to miss but they are going to put their full weight behind it. Matt and Karen approach a relationship but how do you save the city during prime dating ours? And what happens when you blow someone off because whelp this really mean drug dealer is moving in to the area and I have to smack him around so he understands that this might be a bad career move. And I forget what year we decided the "too dumb to realize his constant excuses aren't adding up" female love interest was passe' but I am so glad we did.
It goes down in Hell's Kitchen, and like a real one its not always neat. Things bubble over, they splash, they smoke and they run. They don't completely abandon Wilson Fisk just because they put him upstate which is good, he is the Kingpin jail time was inevitable but even crooks can keep things going while doing to. And Fisk was one of the best, in season two you see exactly how smart a man Fisk really is, how dedicated to the long game, and how quickly his manipulations snap into place. The other good thing about Kingpin being around is that you get to see a growth of both Kingpin and Daredevil, as well as how Kingpin's growth affects Daredevil.
Because in Matt Murdock's mind seeing Wilson Fisk in prison was a huge step in the right direction of saving Hell's Kitchen, so what happens when the sturdiness of that step is found to be less than secure. Season two has a lot of bad guys, not the 1-800-henchmn variety this time around though. You have rival gangs fighting to seize the territory left over after the demise of Kingpins organization, as I mentioned earlier Kingpin is out of the picture but not completely and he is about to learn how to stretch his arms outside of his box. I also like that they actually went back to quite a few of the comics for the interactions between Castle and Daredevil, I can think of about 5 panels that we see play out between them and it is worth every line of dialogue. I also like that while The Punisher is getting his own netflix show, they still dealt with the seriousness of his "calling" it's something I thought the Thomas Jane movie got right. He isn't just a wild dog, nor is he just the tip of the spear, he is a predator culling a wild and diseased herd. You also hear rumblings about Luke Cage and Jessica Jones throughout the season, not always name dropping but details and murmurs.
Just like season one they pace the show well and keep you looking out for the next surprise, and while season one ended just with Matt in costume appearing ready to take on the world after seizing ahold of his new mantle as the devil and smacking around street toughs season two leaves you with a lot of questions. Questions you can't wait to have answered when season 3 drops sometime next year, new skills, new equipment, new foes, and new problems whats a little catholic boy to do, the Devil isn't just in the details sometimes he's in the kitchen.
This is my more mature blog. By mature I mean I'm going to follow some rules and I'm going to try and do more then take the easy way out. No cursing I gotta find a different way to say it and still emphatically get my point across
