Now there are many different facets to Crossout, it doesn't really have a story mode per se. It is all online play you are either in up to 8 on 8 matches, involved in up to 4 player co op to face the AI, there is a "free for all" mode, and Clan battles. There are groups of various NPC groups that you can choose to be a part of, which will grant you spare parts, the ability to craft various parts and weapons(each sect has it's own specialization and thus part access that they grant you) of various rarities, there is an area to "showcase your builds" which can allow other players to like or test drive your latest mad mechanic creation, and a market place to trade your rare or higher valuation parts.
Let me get this out of the way first, Crossout is a grind. I think the game came out two months ago and I have been playing the game for the most part for the last two months it is fun, I have been trying my damndest to find the best combinations, the highest dps, and the strongest armor combinations to protect my damage dealing abilities. so anyway the areas you will see the most
The Garage
This is where you will do most of your preening and preparing. It is basically a submenu area. You can choose to build a car(or augment the car you are driving), go into the various battle scenarios, or test drive your current built car. You can also access any cars you have previously built and saved, as well as cars from the NPC group you are a part of if you have the parts for it, if not you can test drive the vehicle and see if it gives you any ideas. Another feature that I find kind of cool is if you have SOME but not all of the parts for a certain blueprint you can assemble what you have and then fill in the blanks with other pieces in your storage.
Factions
These are the NPC groups mentioned earlier. The MAIN faction is called the Engineers, you will stay with this group for the most part throughout your time playing crossout. At level 10 you can join a secondary faction so that you can earn your way to twice as many parts, as well as get access to more blueprints for vehicles and weapons. When you hit level 25 you have the chance to "prestige" and join a new main faction, it is optional though. you will see a lock on the prestige faction until level 25 and you can join them whenever you like. I am personally waiting til I hit level 30 in Engineers but only because its an achievement.
Engineers offer you a free common workbench but if you wish to craft rarer parts you need credits to buy workbench access. You also only get a free workbench from the engineers everyone else you gotta pay. You can pay a small amount to make up to 5 parts or a larger amount to be able to craft more. See tips for newbies down below so you can see how to make credits without having to spend money. All crafting requires scrap, rare or higher crafting MAY require common level parts to help you create it. Some items also require wire or electronics. What you need to build a part is always listed in the part requirements. Most rare items take an hour, more valuable items take longer.
Battles
As mentioned before there 4 types of battles
- Missions
- Raids
- Brawls
- Clan battles
Missions are the 8 v 8 team death match battles. Missions are basically every fps games hardcore mode. You get one life, you die that's it, you have to spectate. Raids are the up to 4 player co op PVE battles. Now for Raids you spend fuel(when can be one in missions) you get 200 to start, and once it's gone you have to attach a fuel tank of some sort to your vehicle(it's a vehicle part) so that you can get more fuel and refuel your tank. Now the rules of getting fuel in regular missions is you have to win, finish the match alive, AND not have your fuel tank blown off in the process(more on that later). Brawls can be free for alls, Leviathan hunts, races, or themed battles. They give a little bit of variety to your multiplayer matches. And clan battles are just that, if you find a crossout clan that you wish to join you and your clan mates can take on other clans for resources and bonuses.
The Loot crates
I know that loot crates are the new thing in gaming, though prizes of various sorts have been offered in games for years. There are a couple of different ways to get loot crates. Each day you can play 2 hours a day and get the DIY crate, me and the RNgesus have not been getting along lately. The DIY is the common loot crate and I have mostly been getting the most common and cheap drops possible. Then if you do make it all week picking up your DIY crates and you make it to 14 hours a week you can get a rare loot crate. now it has better quality drops, more of them of the blue rare variety but again, the way me and RNGesus been clicking lately TRASH. Inside the crates you can get weapons, wheels, accessories, parts, horns(yes as in vehicle horns), and paints to change the color of your various parts. They also give you the ability to earn rare and higher crates in the seasons tab, basically you have to do various tasks and if you can do enough of them in a row in a series of matches through the week, collecting minor rewards along the way you can get a veteran(rare), pathfinder(epic), or I forget what the name of the legendary crate is. I don't even bother with that.
The Weapons
Weapons in crossout vary in type, caliber, and rarity. There are cannons, machine guns, chain/Gatling guns, shot guns, turrets, heavy paired machine guns, rocket launchers, grenade launchers, and drone launchers. Most of these are self explanatory a cannon is obviously some sort of heavy caliber shell shooting weapon, it mostly shoots straight forward. A turret cannon is a cannon that has more mobility instead of just going up and down it can rotate as far as it's gun has a clear path. Machine guns are machine guns. Shotguns are weapons that fire close range high impact rounds. Drone launchers release mini vehicles of some sort for short periods of time to attack your enemies or protect objectives. Chain/Gatling guns are of course the high velocity round firing weapons that have to spin up first before the release their bullets.
Resources and credits/money
Yes, there is in-game currency in crossout. No you don't actually have to pay to win. some of the resources in crossout that are tradeable are
- Copper
- Wire
- Electronics
- Fuel
- Scrap
- Coupons
By tradeable I mean you can gather minimum of double digit amounts of each of those things and put them on the marketplace for people to buy from you. Copper and coupons are given out in Raids, depending on the level of raid you enter you can get 1 to 5 copper and up to 6 coupons a day in the lowest level ones, 120 coupons and I think it's 15-30 copper in the highest level ones. The level is determined by the amount of fuel you use. 20 is the lowest level 100 the highest. Scrap is given out in missions and is used to build most parts. You get scrap in regular missions and as long as you get at least 30 reputation points in a fight you should get about 10 scrap. The most I have ever gotten in a match is 19. If you have the proper level and a strong enough vehicle to hit the two highest tier missions you will get either Wire or Electronics. Understand though the high level fights are not for the faint of heart. Everybody is of a guaranteed Power Score(that is calculated by the armor rating and damage potential of your vehicle). So while you MIGHT be able to through enough heavy armor piece to get you up there if your DPS isn't right stay in the lower level fights and just collect your scrap.
My tips for newbies
Play in as many matches and raids as you can. You are going to die, a lot. Save up your scrap if you can get 1000 scrap(which if you are lucky is about 100 matches or a little over 3 hours off of your rare loot crate time) you can get about 200 credits(give or take the market is players buying from other players. Folks can be cheap) which would allow you to buy better parts and weapons, usually somewhere in the rare variety. If you and RNG are in sync and you win the roll for an epic or rare level item decide what you want for your gaming experience if you want to show off the big shiny weapon fine. But if you would rather use it to build up your credits to buy something you can sell it. Decide how you want to play and what you want to use. If you want to be a close in fighter but you got a long range weapon sell it and use the credits you get to buy the weapon of your choice.
Crossout is a free to play game that allows microtransactions (like almost every game does now) I think it is still technically in live beta but it plays pretty well. The only thing that annoys me is that every once in a while it disconnects me from the server but that could be a combination of my connection and the way I connect to people in the match. There isn't really a team up feature in crossout yet either, teams are randomly composed and if you run with the same group the whole time cool but you may be separated, so don't give away any vehicle weaknesses lest the chatty team mate gets swapped over and gives out the details to his new best friends.
If you decide to hope on the crossout train, have fun and if you catch a cannon to the face or back, sorry not sorry.
