A few months ago, through a client we acquired a Keurig single cup coffee brewer. Yes, yes I know bougie as all get out but it was free, mainly because the little holder for the K cups was missing (someone probably threw it out by mistake) and the person had just went ahead and bought a whole new unit instead of waiting around for that small little piece. SO we got a come up, "Go team Venture" we of course ONLY having to buy that little piece didn't have that much outline (it was like under 10 bucks) and as we are all coffee drinkers have been enjoying various K cup coffees(or making bleh faces, cause not all are winners) ever since. Now yes, I know if you have known me for any amount of time you will now that I USED to say "I HATE COFFEE," Hot Chocolate, sure. Tea, definitely wanna add a color to it:Black, green, white, red well lets gone ahead and party. But coffee nah, not over here pahtnah.
Then the Ex Spouse started working at a satellite of a big chain coffee shop inside a nice sized chain big box establishment, granted she wasn't the ex at the time so of course I tried to find something said chain sold, which I did find. A mocha latte with a few shots, a couple of pumps here and there and viola, a daily morning favorite is born. Of course just because I have a favorite doesn't mean I can always get to it. I for all intents and purposes work out of my car/vehicle, Always moving around but not always moving towards my morning caffeine. Which can leave my less than cheery morning demeanor to be down right ogreish(and anyone who impugns my character to say I am always ogreish can get stuffed), which is why the K cups can come in handy. Now I have found a few that I like:
- Hot Apple Cider
- Chai Latte
- Caramel Latte
- Caramel Cappucino
- Hot chocolate
Which of course lead me to todays adventure, I was out getting some almond milk(unsweetened, vanilla) for the house when I noticed that the local Kroger was having a sale on SOME of their K-cups. and while I was looking around I saw this on sale
Now of course this wasn't the ONLY type of K cup on sale in fact most of their varieties were but this one looked like it was right up my alley so I decided to purchase it. I am of course a K cup newbie so I haven't done ANY 2 step cups before this one but hey in for a penny in for a pound right. Now some might ask: If you drink a lot of coffee why would you get the small box? Because while it was on sale which of course allows for me to try it out without spending full price which to me is always the way to go, I mean free is always better just in case it is nasty or you don't like it but reduced price is also a good option. So anyway I read the instructions you pour you packed of powder(which becomes FROTH) into your cup, place the k cup into the holder and brew away. I wasn't sure how it was gonna turn out but hey, fortune favors the brave or some such jazz right so I picked it up and decided to try a cuppa even though it is late but A) coffee doesn't work on me long maybe an hour or so in which time of course I will already be gaming and B) if it was nasty I wouldn't be finishing the cup anyway.
I had to find a cup of course, and since I wanted to see what it looked like through the process I picked a clear glass one(which I will show in a picture later), checked the water level in the Keurig, and got everything set up. Now for my adventure into Gevalia
Here is the clear cup(with the powder already added)
no it doesn't look like anything special just a powder mix with some milk in it. I may have even spilled some of it onto the counter, for no other reason than I wasn't paying close enough attention. I mean it smelled okay once some of the particles got into the air which to me was a definite plus, if you pour something in a cup and an unsavory funk hits your nose I PERSONALLY feel that you can abort the mission. Nah seriously ain nobody got time to be imbibing something nasty smelling unless it is medicine and even then you have to work yourself up to it. but yeah the process was started so now it was time to see it through. Granted all I had to do was put the cup under the Keurig, place my preferred K cup inside and then wait for the machine to start and finish brewing, I mean honestly this isn't brain surgery it's in home coffee making. And this isn't even the more RECENT Green Hornet movie where the coffee machine is some elaborate device that ONLY Kato can tame. I mean even though Eikichi is too lazy to follow the directions it's basically:
- Keep full of water
- wait til it is ready to receive a cup
- put your cup under the dispenser
- place your K cup inside
- pick how large a cup you are filling
- press brew
- wait for it to finish brewing your beverage
- Let it dispense your beverage into the cup
- add your preferred enhancers to your coffee or just drink.
Not only that but it has a mini LCD screen with ON SCREEN PROMPTS, IE Kitsune is just spoiled. And he forgets that his siblings are not the kind and friendly types, I mean we have our moments but mostly we are typical siblings annoyance runs high in our family. Now I really don't know how this thing handles burst shots, plus I suck at taking them so I WOULD add a gif of said burst shots but I can almost guarantee it ain gonna come out right So I will just pick the: Best, Straightest, Nicest looking shot of when it was being filled and then go from there. Because I usually just shoot the video, yes I know burst shot has been around for like 3 or 4 years I just haven't had much use for it. I am going to get better I swear, I know that I am on the march to old fogeyhood(hell I am drinking coffee now isn't that like the first or fifth step, I forget) but I do try and keep up with SOME tech trends and not just in the gaming community(though we know I am heavy into that), so as I find a use for something I start making use of it, forget how to do it and then brainstorm/put in the Google work to figure it out again.
Anyway enough stalling let us find that coffee shot and get things popping shall we. Ah yes, here we
go just beginning the process you start to see the powder disappear and the cup fill. I tried to realign my camera but again NORMALLY if I am gonna do something I just shoot a short video, maybe in the morning. You can barely see the steam and it looks like some medium brew coffee, we have some Starbucks Cinnamon Dulce but I really wasn't feeling it, I don't mind cinnamon in some things but in others it is a complete turn of, like cinnamon gum or liquor nah I'll pass. So with the cup beginning to feel the smell was getting even better granted it wasn't gonna be one of those as the machine starts sputtering out I just drink the coffee/beverage moments OH NO, oh no I still had to stir the beverage hopefully enough to create proper froth. And if you think I actually worried about proper froth shame on you, I stirred it til I believed a majority of the powder was assimilated into the drink, then gave it a few more stirs just to make sure and then I began gathering my things up to come up hear and begin writing this blog, Smh come on now, we have been at this for a while, you know I really ain a frills guy. Give me what I asked for, make it properly, and once it's done I am off to the races, if it's wrong I'll be back but if it's right thank you kindly and off I go. So once I got to stirring it started to change colors a little bit, no clue if it's the exact color it is supposed to be on the box and of course my foam probably ain no where near right, I just stirred it well enough to make the power disappear and this isn't one of the units that has the frother attachment(do they even make Keurigs with frother attachments or is that just cafe machines, inquiring minds).
I mean when I go to the big coffee chain that somehow is able to anger various sides of the political spectrum and then appease one while still annoying the other may add whip cream to my drink, didn't have any handy(as in right in front of me, some MAY have been in the fridge) and like a lot of tests I just wanted to try out the coffee and not the coffee plus things thrown in there to make it BETTER coffee(minus the first step of course, that is a part of THIS coffee).
So what does our FINAL cup of coffee look like when everything is all said and done, why that right there. I mean it isn't perfect, I probably should have allowed the Keurig to either brew more coffee or else used a smaller cup(I haven't figured out which yet). It is a nice experiment though and I did like the flavor of the coffee the two step process might be a little annoying though but hey, if you don't try out something new you may never know what you do or don't like. And in this case I feel it was a good purchase, I enjoy the flavor of the coffee there is a little bit of bitterness there but not enough to make me want to spit it out(like the cinnamon Dulce). I know the froth isn't top notch but it did help add to the flavor of the beverage on top of which I could actually taste the vanilla. A lot of these flavored coffees SAY they have vanilla, brown sugar, caramel, or some other flavor in them but when you try them it's like bleh. I'm glad that I am writing this blog about a GOOD coffee experience and experiment.
If nothing else if you have a Keurig try a coffee, tea, or flavored journey every once in a while it might be fun. Now if you just so happen to pick a NASTY flavor, just pretend you are in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, you got the ear wax bean.
